Wonderland Agristock Limited (WAL), based in Hela Province, has begun purchasing kaukau from local farmers at K1.30 per kilogram to use as primary feed for pigs.

WAL Chairman Larry Andagali said the price support initiative is already delivering results for Tari-Pori electorate farmers.

“100kg of kaukau will earn you K1,300 net – better than a public servant’s pay,” Mr. Andagali said. “10 bags of 100kg kaukau will earn you K13,000 from your own land.”

He described agriculture as central to Hela identity and self-reliance.

“Every man is built to work the land and sustain himself. That is who we are, perfectly and powerfully built to sustain life. This is where we belong,” he said.

Mr. Andagali said WAL is working with the MPs for Komo-Hulia and Koroba-Lake Kopiago to extend similar price support to farmers in those electorates.

The company’s next major step, he said, is to construct an abattoir to process pork for domestic and export markets.

“We will then start exporting processed pork to Hela, other parts of PNG, and abroad,” he said.

He urged Hela people involved in tribal conflict to lay down their differences, surrender illegal firearms to the state, and turn to small business and agriculture for sustainable income.
