Milne Bay sets three-day independence program
Celebrations are well underway in Alotau, Milne Bay, as a three-day program began yesterday to commemorate Papua New Guinea's 51st Independence anniversary.
Activities started as early as eight in the morning and the excitement is building up across Alotau.
Government vehicles were seen convoying through the main streets of Alotau town in a spectacle of red, black and gold colors with cultural groups on board chanting, singing, dancing, and sharing the festive spirit with goodies shared to bystanders along the roadside.
With just hours remaining for PNG to celebrate its 51 years of being independent as a country, the convoy of vehicles held yesterday and today demonstrates unity and solidarity in the province.
It is also a call to citizens of Alotau town to come together as people of Milne Bay and celebrate on Wednesday, 16th of September.
Milne Bay Tourism Bureau has been tasked to organize and coordinate Alotau's celebrations.
The three-day program started with cultural dances, sports and live performance by King of Tolai Rock Leonard Kania and Basil Greg.
Similar activities will continue today leading up to the actual day tomorrow.
The celebrations in Alotau on Wednesday will include marching, led by Correctional Institute Services, followed by the Police Force, Provincial and private security services, Milne Bay Provincial Administration, scouts, schools, churches, non-government organisations, business houses and other interested groups.
The synchronized march will be provided by the famous Manus drum beat by Milne Bay Manus Cultural group.
Fun activities will also be featured on Wednesday including pikinini sports, greasy poles, catch-the-piglets among other fun games.
