New hangar at Balimo airstrip to boost services

A new K9.2 million aircraft hangar was officially opened at Balimo Airstrip today, aimed at strengthening aviation services in Western province.

The facility, funded by the Sustainable Development Program [SDP], was built between June 2024 and 2026. It includes a modern aircraft hangar, an aircraft fuel shed, and two aircraft parking bays.

SDP says the completion of the hangar is critical to supporting the safe operation and maintenance of MAF aircraft, which provide vital services to communities across Western.

These services include transporting students and teachers of Balimo College, freight such as vegetables, and the delivery of essential medical services through SDP’s Aerial Health Patrol program, including emergency medevacs.

MAF is SDP’s aviation partner and operator based in Balimo. MAF has been providing critical air services in the region since it first established a base at nearby Wasua in 1962.

The new hangar will now house MAF’s regional operations, including aircraft, equipment, passenger handling facilities and an office. It also provides shelter for two airplanes and a safe place for engineering and maintenance work.

SDP chief executive officer Lesieli Taviri said the investment reflects SDP’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure that improves service delivery in Western Province.

“Investments in aviation infrastructure are investments in people. They improve access to healthcare, education, markets and emergency services while helping ensure communities remain connected and supported," Taviri said.

Dom Sant, Country Director of MAF in PNG said the Balimo airstrip serves as a critical gateway for the Delta and Middle Fly districts.

“The MAF hangar and surrounding aviation facilities funded by SDP plays a vital role in enabling MAF’s services throughout Western Province including SDP’s aerial health patrols and community development programs," Sant said.

SDP thanked the Western Provincial and District level government for their continued support in improving aviation services for the people.
