Solar lighting donation brings relief to school and churches in Kutubu LLG
Three churches and a primary school in Gesege Village, Kutubu Local Level Government [LLG], received solar panels and lighting systems over the weekend, donated by community leader Fiebik Kilip. This is not the first such donation from the former Southern Highlands Deputy Provincial Administrator.
A few weeks ago, he provided similar solar lighting support to several churches in the Nembi Pletau LLG within the same district.
The donation is expected to end long-standing lighting challenges for students, church members, and the wider community in the remote area.
Speaking during the handover during the weekend, Mr. Kilip said the solar systems would provide reliable lighting for evening study, church services, and community activities.
“Urban schools have access to electricity, and their students are more advanced because of it. Teachers there can prepare lessons, print tests, and assignments with ease, while rural schools often spend money buying generators and fuel,” he said.
He noted that churches in remote areas also struggle to hold night fellowships and for pastors to prepare sermons after dark.
"The donation of solar lights is expected to enhance evening fellowship activities in churches, enabling pastors and members to gather safely after dark and participate in worship, prayer, and community programs without relying on limited or unreliable lighting.
“This gift may not be much, but it is a way to appreciate the schools and churches in remote areas that continue to sacrifice to provide vital services to our people,” Mr. Kilip said.
Hegeso and Gesege ward councilor, community leaders and people said the donation would significantly improve learning conditions for students and support nighttime church programs that were previously limited by lack of power.
