Fatal Vanimo crash triggers major traffic enforcement operation in West Sepik
West Sepik Police are preparing to launch a major traffic enforcement operation following a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of a young couple along the Vanimo-Wutung Highway on Sunday.
The couple died after the motorcycle they were travelling on collided with a Toyota Land Cruiser along the Ilolo section of the highway between 11am and midday on September 13.
According to police, the couple were returning towards their village and were carrying a birthday cake for their daughter when the collision occurred.
Both the motorcycle rider and his wife died at the scene.
Police have since arrested and detained a 24-year-old man in connection with the accident.
West Sepik Provincial Police Commander, Senior Inspector Silas Kuiano, says investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
He has appealed to relatives of the deceased, residents of Lido and nearby villages, and the wider Vanimo community to remain calm and allow police investigators to carry out their work.
“This is a tragic loss of two young lives, and we understand the pain and grief being experienced by their families and community,” Senior Inspector Kuiano said.
He said any charges arising from the investigation would be dealt with through the proper legal process.
The fatal crash has also prompted renewed concern from West Sepik Police over road safety, particularly the growing number of motorcycles operating across the province.
PPC Kuiano says the increasing use of motorcycles has been accompanied by a rise in serious and fatal road accidents involving motorcycle riders.
As a result, West Sepik Police will commence a major traffic enforcement operation targeting motorists and motorcycle riders who breach traffic laws.
The operation will target:
• Unregistered and uninsured motorcycles
• Unlicensed motorcycle riders and motor vehicle drivers
• Vehicles and motorcycles without valid roadworthiness certificates
• Driving or riding under the influence of alcohol
• Dangerous, careless and reckless driving or riding
• Other serious breaches of traffic laws
Police will work with relevant transport and road safety authorities to strengthen compliance and reduce preventable deaths on West Sepik roads.
The PPC has also reminded vehicle owners, drivers and motorcycle riders to ensure their vehicles are properly registered, insured and roadworthy, and that they hold valid licences.
He is urging all road users to exercise greater caution, observe speed limits and wear approved safety helmets.
Motorists and motorcycle riders have also been warned against unsafe practices, including carrying passengers or operating vehicles and motorcycles unsafely.
The latest crash adds to growing concern over road deaths along the Vanimo-Wutung Highway, with four reported road deaths recorded over the past two months.
Police say stronger regulation, compliance and enforcement will be necessary as motorcycle use continues to increase in the province.
PPC Kuiano says the relevant authorities should also review arrangements governing the importation, registration and licensing of motorcycles entering and operating in West Sepik.
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” the PPC said, warning that one careless decision on the road can destroy lives and leave families and communities dealing with lasting grief.
