K10m cattle project to revive Western province livestock sector

A K10 million Pilot Cattle Project is set to spearhead the revival of the livestock industry in Western Province, following a commitment announced by newly appointed Minister for Livestock and Member for Delta Fly, Agena Gamai.

The initiative was unveiled during minister Gamai's first official state visit to the province from September 11 to 13, accompanied by Livestock Development Corporation [LDC] managing director Steven Yangis and senior technical officers.

Under the pilot project's initial phase, 200 cattle will be mobilized from the Launakalana ranch in Rigo, Central province, and transported to primary project sites, including Awaba, Kenewa, and Morehead. The funding allocation will cover essential infrastructure, including perimeter fencing, farm supplies, and direct technical support for local growers.

Prior to the rollout, LDC technical teams conducted field assessments across key locations in Awaba, Kenewa, Wasua, Oriomo, Morehead, and Weam, to evaluate land suitability for cattle ranges, potential abattoir sites, and Post-Entry Quarantine [PEQ] facilities.

Addressing local leaders and residents in Awaba, Gamai said the project will bring economic significance to the region.

"When I took office, I made it clear that Western Province would be my top priority," the minister said. "This industry was originally established by missionaries and once thrived here, particularly among the Gogodala people. I am here to rebuild it and restore confidence among our farmers."

The Ministry of Livestock will partner with the Fly River provincial government, district authorities, and local-level government [LLG] presidents to execute the project through community-based farmer cooperatives. A formal Memorandum of Understanding [MOU] outlining the inter-governmental framework is scheduled for signing shortly.
