Gang targeted in law and order funding

Northern governor Garry Juffa has escalated the fight against organized gangs, committing K6 million to law and order initiatives across the province.

From this, K1 million was released today to launch the Provincial Police Command Reserve Training Program, which will recruit 100 reserve officers to reinforce frontline policing in hotspot areas where the notorious 'I Don’t Care Gang' is most active.

Governor Juffa said the gang has been responsible for widespread chaos, forcing teachers and health workers to abandon rural posts in fear of violent attacks.

“We are very concerned in Northern Province about the rise of gangs such as the ‘I Don’t Care Gang’ and in Momase, the ‘Operation Burukim Tulait’ gang. These groups are organized, they communicate, and they carry out violent attacks on our communities,” Juffa said.

The Provincial Government has completed an assessment of gang activities and recommended to the National Executive Council [NEC] that these groups be declared terrorist organizations under the Counter-Terrorism Act.

“If we don’t act decisively, it will send the wrong signal and encourage the proliferation of such gangs in other provinces,” Juffa said.

Meanwhile, the reserve training program will prioritize Grade 12 school leavers and local residents, aiming to restore safety and dismantle criminal networks.
