Supreme Court confirms James Nomane as new leader of the Opposition
The Supreme Court has today confirmed the earlier vote by Opposition MPs, officially declaring Chuave MP James Nomane as the new Leader of the Opposition.
Mr Nomane said the court’s decision reflects what most Opposition MPs have wanted since June 2025, but could not achieve earlier due to political interference. He said he is humbled by the support and is ready to carry out his responsibility of keeping the government in check.
As the new Opposition Leader, Mr Nomane said he will step up efforts to hold the government accountable for its laws, budget spending, and policy decisions. He said the fight for fairness, development, honesty, and good leadership will be challenging, but it must start with a leader who is prepared to face those challenges.
Mr Nomane said the country will hear more from the Opposition tomorrow when Parliament begins its budget session. He said they will outline what Papua New Guineans can expect from the Opposition under his leadership, including their plans to challenge the government.
He also acknowledged senior MPs in the Opposition, including Allan Bird, Kerenga Kua, Lino Tom, Sir Puka Temu, Brian Kramer, James Donald, Robert Atiyafah and Peter O’Neill. He said these leaders will guide the team as first-term MPs like Keith Iduhu, Maso Hewabi and William Hagahuno continue to learn.
Mr Nomane said the role of the Opposition is now more important than ever, especially at a time when he claims the Executive Government is abusing its power. He said the Opposition will continue to scrutinise government decisions and present itself as a credible alternative for the country.
He thanked the people of Chuave and Simbu for their support and said he is honored to take on the role, promising to serve the national interest with integrity and dedication.
