The Motu Koita Rugby League Association [MKRL] will stage its 7th Grand Final this Saturday at the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium.

Defending premiers, the Buria Reds will face the Laurabada Steelers in a battle for the A Grade NCD Governor Powes Parkop Cup and the K10,000 prize money.

The Reds are ticking all the boxes as they push to retain their title for a second consecutive year. The grand final clash between the competition’s top two sides is expected to draw Motuans from across the city.

Reds captain Morea Tau said he is confident in leading his men into the much-anticipated showdown. The team from Papa Lealea Village enters the match with nothing to lose and is backed by a strong group of rising talents from their junior divisions.

“Preparation throughout the week has been on par, and all the players are looking forward to clinching another premiership,” Tau said.

Determined to secure their first-ever title, Steelers captain Oala Eda said he would not be backing down. He added that he believes strongly in the core of players in the team’s spine, who he says have what it takes to perform on the big stage.

In the U20 division, the Ranuguri Broncos will take on the Lahara Magpies, with the cup winners to receive K5,000. The Broncos, were narrowly beaten by Baruni Eagles in last year’s grand final, will be eager to make amends and secure victory this time around.

Meanwhile, MKRL President Arthur Patrick said the season has had its share of hurdles, but he is grateful the competition has successfully reached the business end of the year. He thanked NCD Governor Powes Parkop, the Motu Koita Assembly, and other supporters who have backed the competition throughout the season.

Patrick also called on fans to turn out in numbers and support their teams in the true spirit of sportsmanship. He added that the competition continues to serve as a pathway for scouting and developing players as part of MKRL’s bid to secure a franchise in the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup next year.
