Southern Cross Insurance committed K30,000 to support this year’s PNG Open, with a strong focus on developing junior golf talent across Papua New Guinea.

Company chief underwriting officer Uari Oaveta said the sponsorship was not just about backing a major sporting event but about creating opportunities for young golfers to pursue the sport regardless of their background.

“Our main aim is to ensure no child is disadvantaged from playing golf because of economic circumstance,” Oaveta said. “We want to draw in as many kids as possible, give them the opportunity to experience the game, and help those with talent reach the next level.”

PNG Golf Association president Ian Hodges said the funds from Southern Cross were not only used for the PNG Open tournament but will also support the roll out school clinics and training camps starting in October, aiming to identify raw talent from across the provinces.

Hodges said the company has been one of the staunch supporters of the code in PNG and plans are underway to support caddies and senior golfers with development opportunities.

The sponsorship aligns with the PNG Golf Association’s broader goal of building a strong pipeline of players. Hodges said that in the last two decades only one PNG golfer, Nelson Gabriel, has broken through to the professional circuit. “We’re here now to make that dream come true for others,” he said.

While the PNG Open remains the premier event, which featured more than 120 international and local professionals, Hodges emphasized that its legacy must extend beyond one week of competition.

“This tournament is important, but its real value is in inspiring young Papua New Guineans to believe they can one day compete on the professional tour,” he said.
