Australia reaffirms commitment to long-term development support in Western Province

Australia’s High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea John Feakes reaffirmed his country’s ongoing support for development in Western Province during the launch of the Provincial Integrated Development Plan in Daru.

Feakes highlighted Australia's dedication to sustainable, long-term assistance crucial for improving the province’s infrastructure and services.

He assured provincial leaders and the people of Western that Australia’s support would continue, emphasizing the importance of this partnership for achieving sustainable development outcomes.

Feakes also drew attention to the deep historical ties between Australia and the region, referencing the Torres Strait Treaty, which marks its 40th anniversary this year.

“Our modern partnership is built on shared values and aspirations,” he said.

“Together, we aim to provide the best education for our children, a reliable healthcare system, and greater opportunities for our citizens—all of which are reflected in the development plan being launched today."

The Australian High Commissioner praised the vision laid out in the province's five-year development plan, thanking Western Province Governor Taboi Awi Yoto and the four local MPs for their leadership.

He said Australia’s investments in the province has reached record levels, extending across key sectors such as health, education, agriculture, law and justice, and infrastructure.

“Rest assured, Australia is here for the long term,” Feakes said.

He said they're are committed to genuine partnership with Western Province as neighbors and equal partners.

This continued collaboration is expected to drive positive change across the province, addressing the needs and aspirations of the people for years to come.
