A major audit of public funds for the Bougainville Regional Member’s Office has begun, covering financial spending from 2018 to 2023.

This is the first audit of PSIP and DSIP funds since 2013.

The Office of Bougainville Regional MP Peter Tsiamalili Jnr said the audit is aimed at improving transparency, accountability, and good governance.

An audit team from the Office of the Auditor General is now in Bougainville to carry out the exercise.

Tsiamalili Jnr emphasized that this initiative is not only administrative, but deeply rooted in Bougainville’s journey toward nationhood:

“One of the fundamental pillars of the Bougainville Peace Agreement is good governance. It is incumbent upon me, as Regional Member, to uphold this pillar as we move toward the realization of our future.

Beyond the Peace Agreement, we must build a nation that is accountable and transparent in its service delivery to its people".

He further stressed that this initiative sets a new benchmark for leadership accountability, not only for Bougainville but for all regional members across Papua New Guinea.

“This is about accountability and transparency. Every kina must be accounted for, and leadership must set the right example,” he said.

The office also confirmed that financial records for 2024 and 2025 are being prepared and will be submitted for audit by June 2026.
