A book titled "Kastom Giraun" which means customary land in English, has been launched by the Community Advocacy Organization, ACT NOW PNG today.

ACT NOW Campaign Manager, Eddie Tanago in a statement says, this 24 page book is aimed at educating young people, about the value and importance of customary land.

Mr. Tanago says that ACT NOW! will distribute more than 30,000 copies of this book to secondary schools across the country this year, together with educational tools for teachers.

He says that customary land is not only the nation’s most important economic and social asset, but it is what makes Papua New Guineans and their relationship with their land, define their unique cultures and customs.

Mr. Tanago also says that it is also crucial for young people to understand the need to protect customary land, so it can continue to support the lives and livelihoods of the vast majority of the country's population, and the unique PNG ways, as outlined in the PNG Constitution.

He further adds that the book apart from explaining the economic, social and cultural importance of customary land, it also explains how this unique form of land tenure, differs from how land is seen and used in most other countries, and it also explores the threats posed by land registration, and industries like logging, mining and oil palm.

The richly illustrated Kastom Giraun book is available to download or purchase via the website which also features a range of multi-media presentations and interactive learning opportunities.

These include a video explainer, audio podcast, slideshow, flashcards, a mind-map and a quiz.

Schools, teachers and community groups wanting to obtain copies of the Kastom Giraun book can contact ACT NOW at info@actnowpng.org or visit the website, www.kastomgiraun.org
