Tsiamalili says 2027 elections will proceed in Bougainville
Bougainville Regional MP and Minister for Internal Security Peter Tsiamalili Jr has clarified recent public comments made at the Joint Supervisory Body [JSB] meeting this week, saying they have created unnecessary confusion about development funds and Bougainville’s readiness for the 2027 National General Elections.
Minister Tsiamalili said the JSB is an important platform for dialogue between the Autonomous Bougainville Government [ABG] and the National Government, and all parties must engage “responsibly, constructively, and within the law.”
He explained that the issues raised are currently before the courts. The case was initiated by the ABG, and although he previously attempted to settle it out of court, the ABG declined. The National Court ruled against the ABG, which has now appealed to the Supreme Court.
He warned that public comments outside the court process risk misleading people and undermining the integrity of the justice system.
Tsiamalili also clarified the funds under discussion, saying the infrastructure account holds several funding streams, including cocoa and infrastructure development funds that fall under his mandate and are not in dispute. He said the ABG’s concern relates only to the Prime Minister’s K100 million commitment.
The Minister said he is open again to resolving the issue out of court and called on the ABG to return to dialogue for a fair and transparent resolution.
On Bougainville’s long-term future, Tsiamalili said the region must build its institutions on strong legal foundations as it moves towards its political destiny. He said current arrangements may not please everyone but are important for transparency, accountability and good governance.
He also dismissed claims that Bougainville may not take part in the 2027 National General Elections, calling such suggestions “premature and unhelpful.” He said elections are a national constitutional obligation and Bougainville has always shown leadership and respect for lawful processes.
Tsiamalili said he stands committed to working with all leaders to strengthen Bougainville’s development, uphold the country’s institutions, and support preparations for the region’s future.
