Harlequins rugby talent set for Malaysian tour in major sporting exchange

Five members of the Port Moresby Harlequins Rugby Club are heading to Malaysia this month as part of a high-performance exchange program aimed at providing international exposure and elite competition experience.
Three backline players, one forward, and a strength and conditioning coach have been selected for placement with the Armed Forces Rugby Club in Kuala Lumpur. Their stint begins on August 11, just ahead of Malaysia’s prestigious 41st Agong Cup, which runs through to late October.
The initiative comes under a formal collaboration between Harlequins and the Malaysian club and is seen as a milestone in the Harlequins club’s long-term vision to develop structured pathways for emerging rugby talent.
“This partnership is about more than just competition, it’s about creating real opportunities for our players to grow, lead, and inspire,” head coach of POM Harlequins Billy Rapilla said. “We’re proud to see our talent take this next step.”
The placement allows selected players to participate in Malaysia’s elite domestic competitions, providing not only a professional playing environment but also cultural and athletic development.
The Agong Cup, which is named in honor of Malaysia’s king, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, is one of the country’s top rugby tournaments, attracting teams from across the nation in a competitive, state-based format. It serves as a key platform for regional talent and national selection.
The exchange program is supported by the “Go Rural to Go Global” [GRtGG] initiative by the PNG Sports Foundation, which promotes access to elite opportunities for athletes from diverse backgrounds.
Harlequins’ growing international profile has also been shaped by their participation in Malaysia’s renowned COBRA 10s tournament in 2023 and 2024, with preparations now underway for a third appearance at the 52nd edition this November.
The club acknowledged the vital role of corporate sponsors in making the Malaysian placements possible, as part of a broader vision to elevate PNG rugby talent to global stages.
