Condolence walk in memory of Pope Francis at Vatican Embassy

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands held a condolence walk at the Nunciature [Vatican Embassy] in Port Moresby to honor the passing of the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis.
In true Melanesian tradition, they brought garden produce and a pig, symbolizing respect and mourning through cultural customs.
Bishop Otto Separy, President of the Catholic Bishops Conference, delivered a message of sympathy on behalf of the group, expressing sorrow to the embassy. He recalled the Pope’s visit last year, noting that the memory remains vivid in the hearts of the people.
Monsignor Boni of the Nunciature received the gifts and thanked the group for their heartfelt tribute, especially their culturally meaningful gesture. He said the food would be shared with those in need.
"Thank you for coming in this very typical Melanesian way. I'm sure that our Holy Father is so happy in heaven looking at all these flowers which are flowing through these gifts.
"Thank you also for these gifts. I believe the best way to honor your generosity is to continue the spirit of giving. We will pass this food on to the poorest and most in need here in Port Moresby, including the pig as a gift from you to them, " Monsignor Boni said.
Meanwhile, staff members also signed the Book of Condolences, which opened on Tuesday, April 22, and will remain open until Friday, April 25, 2025.
