Women in the Moresby South electorate have commended local MP Justin Tkatchenko following the launch of the Kaugere Music and Market Festival.

The initiative provides a dedicated platform for women and youths in Kaugere to showcase their musical talents while selling local goods, including food, arts, and crafts.

Kaugere Women’s Association Coordinator Susan Kaia said the event was particularly timely as Papua New Guinea prepares for its upcoming 51st Independence anniversary.

"This event was initiated because we wanted to come out openly to showcase our talents and skills, and to highlight what we do in our communities," Kaia said.

"This is the first time an event of this kind has come to us. Thank you to the sponsor, the Honorable Justin Tkatchenko, for always supporting us here at Kaugere Southside."

Despite low initial turnout from buyers, Kaia said that vendors remained enthusiastic about the opportunity to participate.

"Although we didn't have a large number of customers turn up to buy food, crafts, or dresses, we didn't give up. We still came to showcase our talents and skills, and we are happy," Kaia said. "Since this is our first time, we hope to make it even better in the future."
