Women in Media Papua New Guinea [WiM] is set to bring its voice to the region with its first representation to the Pacific Islands News Association [PINA] Summit scheduled to take place in Niue from September 21st to 26, 2024.
PNG's media women are looking at its strengths to leverage support and partnerships to address some of the serious challenges they face, such as harassment while covering stories.
The PINA Summit brings together media leaders, practitioners, academics and development partners, and was identified as a key peak body to speak to.
Post Courier's Security reporter, Marjorie Finkeo and NBC's Health and education reporter, Lyanne Togiba, with the National Broadcasting Corporation are attending for the WiM PNG.
Ms. Finkeo says she’s humbled to be part of this great opportunity to be part of the PINA Summit 2024 representing not just WiM PNG Chapter but also her employer, Post Courier.
"Also, thank you to Women in Media and Media in Council for having confidence in us and allowing being part of the hundreds of media professionals that will be part of the summit in Niue next week.
"As I look forward to the summit, I'd like to also connect and create networking with other media professionals, research experts, government heads, and other Pacific Island fellow journalists that will be working together and sharing pressing issues in the region, such as climate change, sustainability, and regional politics, as well as development issues in the Pacific.
"As a young journalist, it is also an opportunity to learn as much as I can, build my network, understand the issues from a global perspective, and most importantly, how we can write these issues in PNG when we return", Ms Finkeo said.
The duo are members of WiM PNG Core Team that coordinates the country chapter.
Under WiM PNG mentoring agenda, Ms. Togiba and Ms. Finkeo are being supported by The Asia Foundation - Power Up Programme through PINA.
WiM PNG Lead and Secretary of the Media Council of PNG, Belinda Kora says she is proud to see its first WiM members attend the PINA Summit. Ms. Kora added that it is the culmination of a lot of work and working parts that set up the country chapter to now sending its members to international events.

The Media Development Initiative is funding Genesis Ketan who is the Media Council of PNG Treasurer, and a WiM member.
In 2023, the Women in Media PNG chapter was created and formally established under the Media Council of PNG in 2024.
It is part of a larger network of WiM in Australia and the Pacific. The PNG chapter has 217 members working across all the four regions of Papua New Guinea and come from different media practice such as mainstream, church media, diplomacy, public relations and development agencies.
