The investment of millions of kinas’ worth of the government’s tuition fee subsidy over the years has been in vain, with a recent World Bank report highlighting a very poor education outcome for the country.

The report findings are a stark contrast to the millions of kinas spent by the Government over the years.

The world bank findings include, an estimated 72 percent of ten year olds not being able to read and understand age-appropriate texts.

Twenty four percent of students are either in Private run school, illiterate or those who did not go to school.

Only 18 percent of 20-24 year olds completed secondary or some form of tertiary education and 58% of the students received primary or lesser education.

Education Minister Lucas Dawa Dekena in response to the report, in a statement says, there are many factors contributing to the identified 58% of the student not progress in their education journey.

He says these include Infrastructure Deficiencies, teacher Issues, resource constraints, Inequitable Access like unequal teacher to student ratio among others.

Dekena has assured that the government is fully committed to addressing the education crisis in Papua New Guinea.

He says they recognize that this is a complex and long-term endeavour, but with determination, collaboration, and the support of all stakeholders,  every child in PNG nation can receive quality education, empowering them to build a brighter future for themselves and for the country.
