The Government is focused on elevating teaching to become a prestigious profession that is highly respected in the country.

Education Minister Lucas Dawa Dekena says teachers must be given the same level of respect as those in top professions such as doctors, lawyers and engineers.

To achieve this goal, Minister Dekena has urged teacher training institutions in the country to increase their entry cutoff marks to make teaching programs competitive.

He says this will not only attract quality students with good grades for teacher training but also those that are passionate about teaching.

Minister Dekena emphasized the need for students to be taught by well trained and qualified teachers in order to achieve quality education in the country.

The education minister made this known during the China Pacific Teacher Education Conference held at the University of Goroka in Eastern Highlands Province.
