Cancer care is significant milestone

Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) in collaboration with the Flowtint Group successfully completed the commissioning of its Computed Tomography (CT) Simulator, with international technical support over the past five days.

The commissioning involved collaboration between international and local Medical Physicists, bringing together expertise from Australia, Sri Lanka and Papua New Guinea.

As part of the commissioning process, the Medical Physicists established baseline machine performance, conducted quality assurance measurements and verified that the CT Simulator met the required tolerance levels for optimal image quality.

Importantly, the team characterized the relationship between CT Hounsfield Units (HU) and Relative Electron Density (RED) across different tissue-equivalent materials. These values were later incorporated into the Treatment Planning System (TPS) to facilitate accurate radiation dose calculations for radiotherapy treatment planning.

In a statement, P-M-G-H Chief Executive Officer Dr. Paki Molumi said the commissioning results will undergo final technical verification before submission to PMGH Clinical Governance for approval and subsequent release for clinical use.

This achievement represents another significant milestone in strengthening PMGH's capacity to deliver safe, accurate and quality-assured cancer treatment services in Papua New Guinea.
