Goroka LLG boosts services amid growing demand

The Goroka Urban Local-Level Government LLG has acquired five new vehicles to strengthen its operations and improve service delivery across the town.

Goroka’s growing population has increased pressure on the Urban LLG to deliver essential services, particularly water supply and rubbish collection to meet the rising demand.

Town Manager Harold Abori says the new fleet will help the LLG respond to the growing workload and maintain essential services.

“All the money that we’ve collected from water rates, land rates and spot fines was saved, and we saw the need for more vehicles to support our operations.” Abori said.

The new fleet includes a six-ton dump truck and four Isuzu D-Max vehicles, allocated to different sectors to support their daily operations.

Goroka LLG truck driver Brenson Komboli says the growing population has increased rubbish across the town, putting additional pressure on waste collection services.

Mr Komboli says despite the four existing rubbish trucks making four collection rounds daily, they are still unable to clear all the rubbish generated across town.

“Rubbish is a big issue in Goroka. We urge people to dispose of their rubbish at the right places, but they continue to ignore the awareness we provide,” he says.

He says the shortage of vehicles previously forced rubbish collection workers to collect rubbish manually and pile it at designated locations while waiting for trucks to transport it.

Komboli says the additional vehicles will help his team collect and remove rubbish from different locations more efficiently, improving waste management and keeping Goroka clean.

The dedication ceremony was witnessed by Goroka MP Aiye Tambua, provincial government officials and GULLG staff.

With demand for services continuing to grow, Abori is also calling on all district MPs to support the LLG, saying the responsibility of maintaining Goroka as the province’s central town should not rest solely with the Goroka MP.
