The University of Papua New Guinea council in its meeting today, announced the appointment of an independent investigation panel to look into the allegations of “unacceptable conduct” in its administration.

This after Professor Ian Findlay voluntarily resigned last week alleging ongoing unacceptable conduct by Chancellor Sir Robert Igara, who was in turn asked to step down by Prime Minister James Marape.

Students held a sit in protest yesterday (Tuesday 03.11.26) calling for the immediate reinstatement of Findlay and resignation of Sir Robert.

The council also formally announced the appointment of Acting Chancellor Goiye Gileng and Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Betty Lovai.

In a media statement this afternoon, Mr. Gileng says the special council meeting also formally received the complaints and allegations of the former VC and accepted the “voluntary leave of absence” by Igara pending the outcome of the independent investigation.

Gileng has assured students, parents and stakeholders that the council is in control and its business as usual.

The Acting Chancellor is expected to immediately submit a report of the actions taken to the Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology.
