Construction work for Kema and Melant primary schools in SHP continues
Students at Kema Primary School in Lai Valley LLG and the newly established Melant Primary School in Highway Karinz in the Mendi Munihu District of Southern Highlands Province will soon benefit from modern learning facilities, with construction of a 4-in-1 classroom complex at each school nearing completion.
Despite challenges posed by the ongoing El Niño drought, communities have remained committed, ensuring work continues on schedule. Both projects are expected to be completed by the end of this month.
Mendi-Munihu MP Raphael Tonpi, said the new classrooms will ease overcrowding and create a more conducive environment for learning.
“When students learn in a clean, safe and well-maintained building, it sends a strong message that their education truly matters,” MP Tonpi said.
“This builds self-esteem, pride and school spirit. Upgraded facilities directly reduce absenteeism. Students are more motivated to attend school daily when the physical space is welcoming and comfortable,” he said.
He noted that cluttered, dark and overcrowded classrooms often increase stress and behavioural problems among students.
MP Tonpi said the projects are part of the Mendi-Munihu District Development Authority’s (MMDDA) broader plan to revive and restore vital government services in the district.
“Our people’s basic needs are accessible quality education and health services, roads and bridges, power and water, and improved church activities to support the spirituality of our people,” he said.
He described Melant Primary School as a historic milestone for the Highway Karinz community, which has not had a government-registered institution since Independence in 1975.
“Melant Primary School is the first of its kind for the community and is a gift from the MMDDA. Kema Primary is located in a very densely populated area, and this new complex will greatly improve teaching and learning,” MP Tonpi said.
The MP assured that service delivery will continue despite the upcoming elections.
“Even though elections are around the corner, the MMDDA will continue to deliver basic services for our people,” he said.
