The Kopiago Local Level Government (LLG) in the Koroba Kopiago District of Hela Province is gearing up to host its official Gun Surrender Program next Friday, October 30, at Kopiago Station.

Hela Governor Philip Undialu confirmed the date following a recent visit to the LLG prior to attending the current Parliament Session.

He confirmed that the disarmament program will resume following Parliament and will remain active until the state amnesty period officially expires on December 25.

He urged all community members to actively participate in removing illegal firearms and commended local leaders and former warring factions for supporting the peace initiative,
"I am confirming the date and calling on everyone to participate in this important program," Governor Undialu stated. "I want to thank all our community leaders and warring factions in Kopiago who have acknowledged this program. I urge you all to support it and make it a success."

He emphasized that disarming communities is vital for restoring safety and unlocking future leadership representation for the LLG.

Talks are currently underway with the Electoral Commission of Papua New Guinea to stage by-elections for failed polls in Kopiago, the newly established Hewa LLG, and others.

"The people need a leader to represent them," the Governor added. "While we wait for the Electoral Commission, I am calling on the people of Kopiago and Hewa LLGs to ensure guns are removed.

He said people holding unlicensed firearms in the district have two final chances to hand over their weapons under the amnesty grace period: Friday, October 30 at Kopiago Station and Saturday, October 31at Koroba Station.

Governor Undialu warned that law enforcement will strictly enforce gun control laws once the amnesty period concludes.

"People must respect and support this gun surrender initiative. No one will escape. There are people who will report, and police will catch you after the grace period ends," he warned.

Following the Koroba-Kopiago, the surrender program team will advance to Komo-Hulia District before proceeding to Magarima District.
