Child dies in house fire
A child tragically lost his life in a house fire this morning at the Games Village Police Barracks in Port Moresby.
NCD Chief Superintendent for the PNG Fire Services, Saina Luwai, confirmed that the blaze completely destroyed the home of a police officer.
He explained that although the Waigani Fire Station responded within five minutes of receiving the call, the house was already engulfed in flames and beyond saving.
Superintendent Luwai noted that the current El Niño conditions have made it dangerously easy for fires to ignite and spread.
While one child managed to escape, the other was trapped inside and could not be rescued.
According to reports from neighbors, two small children were in the house when the fire broke out.
The Fire Service will investigate the cause of the fire.
