Bush fire threatens Lou Island villages in Manus
A bushfire that has been burning for more than a week on Lou Island in Manus Province is threatening nearby villages, a health centre and food gardens, prompting an urgent appeal for firefighting assistance.
According to information provided by local residents, many food gardens have been affected by the blaze, raising concerns about livelihoods and food security.
The situation comes amid the current El Niño period in Papua New Guinea, with dry conditions already affecting food gardens and water supplies on Lou Island. The ongoing bushfire has placed additional pressure on local food production, raising concerns about food security and the livelihoods of households that depend on locally grown produce for their daily needs.
The fire is reportedly close to Lako Village and the health centre, which also serves as the LLG administrative centre. Rei Village is also reported to be in the path of the advancing fire.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. Reports of possible injuries among people involved in firefighting efforts have not been confirmed, while the full extent of the damage is yet to be established.
Local authorities and the Provincial Disaster Office have reportedly been informed of the situation.
The affected community is appealing for urgent assistance, including firefighting personnel, high-volume water pumps and technical support to assess the fire’s boundaries and establish containment lines.
The community is also requesting helicopter support equipped with a monsoon bucket system to deliver water directly onto active sections of the fire and help contain its spread.
Efforts have reportedly been made to seek assistance from Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), the Australian Defence Force and Pacific Helicopters.
The community is urging relevant authorities to coordinate an urgent response to limit further damage and protect nearby villages, food gardens and essential facilities.
The situation remains concerning as residents await further assistance.
