Kui Wamp Nga Secondary School temporarily suspended

The Western Highlands Provincial Education Board (WH PEB) in an urgent notice dated 04th September 2026, has temporarily suspended Kui Wamp Nga Secondary School for a week.

This suspension follows after the students from Kui Wamp Nga Secondary School staged an "illegal" protest at the school ground yesterday morning calling for the step down of their school principal.

PEB Chairman and Education Executive Manager, Tony Buldung, in a press brief today in Mt Hagen said the suspension of the school also includes the suspension of the school principal and the school's board of governors.

" Kui Wamp Nga Secondary School will be suspended for one week while pending investigation into the school students protest yesterday (030926) that has led to the death of a Grade 11 student," Buldung said.

Mr. Buldung added the suspension is expected to last for only one schooling week and a decision will follow suit.

PEB Deputy Chairman, Leo Meninga stressed that the PEB has request all student leaders, teachers, school administration, and board of governors to give their full cooperation towards the investigation.

" All stakeholders of the school must fully cooperate with the investigation team into the protest which has caused a death so that the culprits involved can be identified and dealt with accordingly," Meninga said.

He added that while the school is under suspension, the PEB has strictly refrain students, teachers and board members from accessing the school's premises until the school is officially opened.

The PEB headed by Chairman Tony Buldung has also extended their apology to what had happened and the relatives and immediate family members of the deceased student.

Moreover, PEB Chairman has also cleared the air that the office of the PEB and respective education offices has not received any petition or complaint from the students prior to their strike and was shocked to receive the news of the students’ protest.

Meantime, a Grade 11 student from Kui Wamp Nga Secondary School has been confirmed dead in regards to the protest and many students and by standers were injured including several police officers who were seriously injured and treated at the Mt Hagen Provincial Specialist Hospital.

The students of Kui Wamp Nga Secondary staged a protest yesterday at their school and attempted to deliver their petition to the education office at Mara Haus- the provincial headquarter.

They were however stopped along the highway and the story still remains unclear who instigated or what transpired there that had ignited the protest to turn nasty leaving one dead and many injured.
