Air search steps up for missing families at sea

The search for five public servants and their family members missing at sea has stepped up today, with a helicopter joining the rescue operation.

A Manalos Aviation helicopter from Lae was brought in by the East New Britain Provincial Disaster Office to assist in the search, which has now entered its second day.

The helicopter arrived at Tokua Airport this morning to refuel and finalise flight plans before beginning an aerial search along the St George Channel between East New Britain and New Ireland provinces.

Authorities say those missing, include 17 children and nine adults.

The group was reportedly returning from a family outing at Pangpang Island at around 4pm on Saturday when they encountered rough seas.

Initial reports indicate the two boats were hit by strong winds and large waves, causing them to capsize.

The two boat operators were rescued on Sunday, while the search continues for the remaining passengers.

East New Britain Governor Michael Marum is expected to hold a media conference at 3pm today to provide an update on the search operation.
