The Wabag National Court has ordered an immediate ceasefire between the Semina Clan and the Tual/Tupal Clans in Kandep District, along the Enga and Southern Highlands border.

Clan leaders Jim Lomepae and Richard Kundapen appeared in court today and were served with seven court orders that must be followed within 14 days.

Resident Judge Graham Ellis said the tribal fighting was affecting people’s constitutional rights, including the right to life, freedom of movement, protection under the law, and freedom of assembly.

The court ordered both clans to lay down all weapons, stop crossing tribal boundaries, avoid causing disturbances along public roads, and obey police instructions.

Judge Ellis also directed both leaders to begin peace negotiations in good faith and reach peace terms within the given timeframe.

The court warned that failing to follow the orders could result in contempt of court charges.
