New facilities bring service closer to Menyamya locals
The people of Menyamya now have new public facilities in their district, including a government office complex, police station, market facilities and a water supply project.
Prime Minister James Marape officially opened the facilities yesterday, alongside a refurbished rural lock-up.
For years, some locals have described Menyamya as the “back page”, highlighting the challenges of accessing government services and basic infrastructure.
The new district office complex, which cost about K14.7 million, was built under a contract awarded to Pioneer Construction and Engineering Limited.
Having government office facilities in the district provides a base for public administration closer to local communities. The services available to locals will depend on which government agencies operate from the complex.
The market facilities provide a designated place for farmers and vendors to sell their produce and other goods, supporting local trading activities.
For families who depend on selling garden produce for income, access to a market is an important part of earning a living. The benefits will depend on how the facility is used by vendors and buyers.
The water supply project includes Southern Cross tanks, adding to Menyamya's water infrastructure. The number of people who will have access to the supply and the project's total cost were not available.
A new police station and refurbished rural lock-up also form part of the developments, providing facilities for police operations in the district.
The projects address different community needs, from government administration and local trading to water infrastructure and policing.
For Menyamya locals, the value of these facilities will be measured by the services they can access, the opportunities available to local vendors and the practical use of the water and police infrastructure.
The opening marks a new stage for the district, with the focus now on how the facilities operate and serve communities across Menyamya.
