Health staff told to look after wellbeing first
As growing workplace pressure and emotional stress continue to affect healthcare workers across the province, Western Highlands Provincial Health Authority (WHPHA) staff are being urged to put their own health and wellbeing first.
To mark the International Labour Organization’s World Day for Safety and Health at Work, the WHPHA conducted a workplace safety and wellbeing training for staff in Mt Hagen, focusing on mental health, stress management, and workplace safety.
The training brought together officers from Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, and Mental Health to remind healthcare workers that caring for themselves is equally important as caring for patients.
Environmental Health Officer, Melissa Steven said staff must remain alert to risks around them and speak up when something feels wrong.
“When something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and raise it,” Steven said.
She said reporting concerns is not only about protecting oneself, but also about protecting fellow workers, patients, and the integrity of the workplace.
Occupational Health and Safety Officer Samuel Masakai warned that neglecting personal wellbeing can have serious consequences, especially in healthcare settings where workers face constant pressure and emotionally demanding situations.
“If you notice a colleague who is persistently tired, losing motivation, or absent more often, these are warning signs that should not be ignored,” Masakai said.
He said unresolved stress can lead to burnout, depression, and emotional exhaustion, affecting both work performance and family life.
Mental Health Nurse Gabriel Ennis also encouraged staff to respect and support one another in the workplace.
“A healthy workplace is everyone’s responsibility because mental health is equally as important as physical health," Ennis said.
Staff who attended the training described the sessions as practical and motivational, saying the program helped them better balance professional responsibilities with personal wellbeing.
