National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop has commanded the Papua New Guinea national cricket team following a victorious performance at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific Qualifier in Japan.
The PNG Barramundis are expected to return to a hero's welcome in Port Moresby on Wednesday, fresh off a dominant campaign that saw four national players selected for the prestigious Tournament Best 12, the highest representation of any country in the competition.
Batsmen Tony Ura, Lega Siaka, and Sese Bau, alongside bowler John Kariko, secured spots in the elite team, showcasing PNG's rising dominance in regional cricket.
In a statement welcoming the team back to Port Moresby, Governor Parkop praised the players' discipline and teamwork, framing the achievement as testimony for the sport domestically.
"This is a proud moment for our country and a testament to the growing strength of cricket in PNG," he said. "The players' achievement reflects their personal commitment, hard work, and also the collective strength of the PNG Barramundis team."

The Governor extended his congratulations across the cricket fraternity, acknowledging the coaching staff, Cricket PNG officials, and the families of the players.
The tournament, which ran from May 8–18, serves as a crucial pathway towards the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Parkop emphasized that the team's international success carries weight far beyond the boundary ropes, serving as a significant tool for national pride.
"Sports continues to unite our nation and inspire young Papua New Guineans to pursue excellence, discipline, and national pride," he said. "The PNG Barramandis have shown the world that PNG can compete strongly on the international stage."
With the qualifiers concluded, attention now turns to the next phase of World Cup preparations. The Governor closed with a call to action for the public and stakeholders to maintain strong support for the Barramundis as they push for further success on the world stage.
