Hela to process cheques locally as IFMS goes live in Tari
The printing of all cheques outside of Hela Province after several months will be over. Provincial Administrator Ronny Angu says the province will now process and print cheques locally on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.
This follows the rollout of the Integrated Financial Management System [IFMS] in Tari last week. He stressed that the launch is expected to improve financial control, speed up payments, and strengthen accountability by keeping financial operations within the province.
Speaking before the first cheque was printed at the Hela Provincial Finance Office, Mr. Angu said the new system would allow payments to be issued as needed, based on the province’s priorities and ongoing projects.
“Hela previously relied on the Speedcast network, which often experienced unstable connectivity and affected IFMS operations. The transition to the DataCo fibre optic network is expected to significantly improve internet reliability, speed, and operational efficiency for government services,” he clarified.
Mr. Angu also announced plans to extend fibre optic connectivity across Hela 1, Hela 2, and Hela 3, improving coordination and communication throughout government offices in the province. He commended technical contractor Lex Tech and DataCo Networks for their role in delivering the fibre optic infrastructure and supporting the Government’s digital transformation agenda.
“Future plans include the installation of biometric fingerprint systems, internet connectivity to all government offices, and broader ICT infrastructure upgrades to modernize workplace management and strengthen accountability,” he stated.
Angu acknowledged the Hela Provincial Governor for supporting major infrastructure developments, including the commencement of the 4MW transmission line project from Hides to Halimbu, which is expected to improve electricity stability in key service areas.
He further revealed that a proposed 1MW solar farm project is also in the pipeline and will help provide sustainable electricity supply for government services, communities, and households throughout the province.
