PNG hosts first construction conference to boost infrastructure sector
The first-ever Construction and Contractors Conference is underway in Port Moresby, marking a major step toward strengthening Papua New Guinea’s infrastructure sector.
Hosted by the Department of Works and Highways, the two-day conference brings together government officials, development partners and private contractors to align on the future of the Connect PNG programme.
With the theme “Building the Nation through Innovation, Collaboration and Sustainable Infrastructure,” the event aims to strengthen contractor capacity, improve construction standards and identify training needs for contractors and engineers.
Opening the conference, Works Minister Peter Tsiamalili Jr emphasised that building and maintaining roads is a shared responsibility across government, partners and the private sector.
Works Secretary Gibson Holemba also highlighted ongoing challenges affecting the construction and infrastructure sector, including extreme weather events such as landslides and flooding.
He said the conference provides an opportunity to identify gaps in the sector and develop solutions to ensure the country remains connected.
The gathering is expected to help shape future infrastructure delivery and support long-term development under the Connect PNG agenda.
