Kavieng PMV operators push for fare hike as fuel price jumps to K8
In New Ireland Province, Public Motor Vehicle [PMV] Bus and Taxi operators in Kavieng town have raised concerns over the sharp increase in fuel prices.
The operators said the rise in fuel price from K4:39 to K8 per litre has placed significant financial pressure on their daily operations, and are calling for an increase in fares to put up with this increase.
They gathered at 9 am today, at the Sir Michael Somare Park, to raise their concerns.
Provincial Administrator Richard Andia, Kavieng town, Mayor Greg Toxie Seth, and Acting CEO Administration and Director LLG Affairs, Ricky Funguto, were on hand to hear their grievances.
They said the increase will affect their ability to maintain services while covering operational costs. They called on ICCC to note that fares must increase to cater for the high demand.
The group is calling on the provincial government and its administration to bring their concerns to the Independent [ICCC] to negotiate an increase in public transport fares.
They proposed that current town fares be increased from K1 to K1:50 or K2 for route one within the town area, whilst routes 2 to 7 must also have a fare increase.
Provincial Administrator Richard assured them that this is beyond their control, but they will communicate with ICCC in the Kokopo office [ENBP]to ensure this concern of an increase in bus and PMV fares is fairly adjusted.
Whatever responses, the PA will return to them Friday this week to address them.
Meanwhile, some buses, taxis, and PMVs are planning to suspend operations until the situation improves.
