Power outages continue as PNG power restores cyclone damaged lines
PNG Power Limited says customers in several provinces may remain without electricity as crews continue restoration work following severe weather linked to Tropical Cyclone Maila.
In an update released Monday, April 6, PNG Power said strong winds and heavy rain over the past 48 hours damaged transmission and distribution lines in Madang, Morobe, Kimbe and East New Britain.
Flooding at Warangoi, Lake Hargy and Ru Creek hydro stations also forced temporary shutdowns, contributing to widespread power outages across affected areas.
Chief Technical Officer Tony Koiri said teams are working under difficult and dangerous conditions to reconnect supply.
“Our teams are working tirelessly in Madang, Morobe, Kimbe, and East New Britain to reconnect communities. Despite the dangerous conditions, PPL staff are maintaining operations at critical sites such as the Warangoi Dam, while also repairing fallen lines and clearing storm debris. Safety remains our top priority, and we urge the public to stay away from fallen powerlines and allow our crews to carry out their work.”
He said most customers in East New Britain are expected to be without power for an indefinite period due to severe damage to transmission and distribution lines caused by heavy rain and recent earthquake activity.
PNG Power says priority is being given to restoring electricity to essential services including hospitals, airports and water supply facilities.
Additional support teams are expected to be flown into Kokopo this week to assist local crews with repair work.
The company thanked customers for their patience, saying efforts continue to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.
