Police in Western Highlands have launched a zero-tolerance Easter operation, with officers placed on full alert to keep the province safe during the holy season.

The operation was officially launched on Thursday, April 1, and will run until April 6.

Western Highlands Provincial Police Commander Chief Superintendent John Sagom launched the operation and assured the public that police will maintain a strong presence throughout the Easter period.

Speaking during the launch, Chief Superintendent Sagom acknowledged the sacrifice his officers will make during a time usually reserved for fellowship, family and rest. He said many officers will spend Easter on duty, standing between order and chaos for the good of society.

"I would like to extend my thank you to my police men and women rank and file for their adherence to their constitutional roles especially during special operations when everyone else have their rests.

"We the police and security forces do not have rests in such special days in the calendar just to keep the communities safe and free from lawlessness and trouble," Sagom said.

In his Easter message, PPC Sagom also thanked the families of officers involved in the operation, saying their patience, understanding and support at home allow police personnel to remain focused on the frontline.

The provincial police chief also appealed to families in Western Highlands, business houses, stakeholders and the travelling public across the Highlands region to work together with police for a safe Easter.

"Police will not hesitate to come down hard on those who are seen breaching the law and who are seen disturbing the public's peace and making a nuisance during Easter.

"Police will make sure to arrest you, charge you, and you can celebrate and spend your Easter in the cell," PPC Sagom said.

Chief Superintendent Sagom reminded the public that Easter is one of the most important periods in the Christian calendar, when families gather to remember the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, reflect on their lives and spend time with loved ones.

He stressed that road checks, public patrols and business monitoring will continue throughout the Easter period to ensure peaceful celebrations.

As part of the operation, police on Friday morning staged a show of strength in and around Mt Hagen City, sending a precautionary message that officers will be out in full force during the holy period.
