Siaka eyes Barramundis selection after stunning campaign in T20 tourney
The Boroko Motors Izusu Men's T20 Smash Champions, Cassowaries captain Lega Siaka has led his side to an unbeaten championship run while sweeping the tournament’s top individual awards.
The 33-year-old cricketer, has over 10 years of experience in domestic and international cricket playing with the Papua New Guinea Barramundis, combined leadership and performance to guide the Cassowaries to victory, winning all four of their fixture matches including the grand final on Sunday, March 29 at Amini Park.
Siaka’s outstanding campaign earned him Player of the Tournament and Best Batsman awards, presented during the grand final ceremony. He starred with the bat, scoring 161 runs from four innings at an average of 53.67 and a strike rate of 137.61. Batting in the top order, he hit seven, fours score and seven of score six, including a top score of 58, and played a key role in the Cassowaries’ innings.
Siaka had earlier set the tone in Round 2 on Friday, March 27, contributing to a match-winning all-round performance to secure a 19-run victory over the Mudmen. The Cassowaries posted 116/6 before bowling out the Mudmen for 97 in 19.1 overs, with Siaka’s efforts earning him Player of the Match honours.
Siaka emphasised that the team’s success was built on shared commitment. He also commended his Cassowaries teammates, crediting their support and teamwork as key to their undefeated run and ultimate title victory.
"And I want to thank the Cassowaries team for the great team support and effort."
He comes from Hanua Bada village in the National Capital District, a community known for its deep cricket roots, Siaka reflected on his journey into the sport with humility.
“Growing up I played a lot of cricket in the village, so I just got into it,” he said.
Now a seasoned campaigner, Siaka is using this latest success as a platform to push for a return to the national side, setting his sights firmly on the Barramundis.
“I wanted to prove myself to the coaches and selectors that I can lead a team and play my best,” he said.
With a quiet confidence, he expressed hope that his performances have not gone unnoticed.
“I do hope the selectors see the effort, skill and commitment I put in this tournament. I want them to believe in me. I am hoping to make the Barramundis team for the next international tour,” he said.
Even with years of experience at the top level, Siaka says the tournament has reinforced his growth as a player, particularly through exposure to emerging talent across the country.
“In this tournament, I saw talent in other teams. It is good to play alongside and against cricketers from different provinces. Milne Bay and Lae-Morobe Privince men showed a lot of skills on field. It is interesting, as watching helped me develop some new techniques too. So I am thankful,” he added.
As the tournament's dust settles on the 2026 Boroko Motors Isuzu Men’s T20 Smash, Siaka’s all-round brilliance has not only secured the trophy for the Cassowaries but has also reignited his ambitions in the National team.
