St Anne’s Girls Vocational School in Alexishafen, Sek, Madang District, joined the nation in celebrating National Women’s Day.

The celebration focused on breaking down systemic barriers and promoting equality for women and girls in Papua New Guinea.

Under the theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” with a sub-theme, “Give to Gain.”

St Anne’s stands out in Madang Province as the only girls’ vocational school, providing young women with essential life skills and empowering them to become confident voices in their communities.

Madang Provincial Government Women’s Representative, Margaret Anut, described her attendance as an honour. She encouraged women not to allow cultural barriers to limit their potential, stressing that women are powerful agents of change.

She highlighted National Goals and Directive Principles No. 2, which focuses on equality and participation, saying it provides a pathway for women to stand up, know their rights, and speak for justice.

“The National Goals and Directive Principles number two ,Equality and Participation ,give us the pathway to stand and speak for our rights,” she said.

Madang Chamber of Commerce and Industry Vice Chairman, Chris Seeto, was also present and said the importance of women’s participation in nation-building. Referencing the vision of Michael Thomas Somare, she noted that empowering women is key to developing the country.

“When we empower women, we empower the nation,” he said.

School Manager Dorothy Gorogoro said the school has operated for over 50 years, continuously providing opportunities for young women despite limited government attention.

She expressed hope that the event would highlight the importance of supporting girls’ education in Madang Province.

The event was attended by students and representatives from Divine Mercy School, Talidig Vocational, government agencies, World Vision, Creative Health Centre, and surrounding communities.
