East Sepik marks National Women’s Day
East Sepik Province joined the nation in celebrating National Women’s Day with a powerful message of empowerment, rights protection, and inclusive development under the theme “Strengthen Women, Protect Rights, Build Papua New Guinea.”
The event, held at the iconic Sir Michael Somare Stadium in Wewak, brought together women leaders, community representatives, government officials, and youth groups from across the province in a vibrant show of unity and purpose.
Deputy Provincial Administrator for Special Projects, Alphones Kami, officially welcomed participants, acknowledging the vital role women play in driving community development and nation-building.
He emphasized that empowering women is not only a social priority but a strategic pathway to sustainable progress in East Sepik.
A highlight of the event was an inspiring address by Captain Racheal Torovi, Second-in-Command of the Military Police Force, Support Company at Murray Barracks.
Speaking on leadership, Captain Torovi shared her personal journey, encouraging women and girls to rise above challenges and take initiative in their own lives.
“Leadership begins right at your doorstep,” she said. “No matter how many times you fail, always take time to rediscover yourself and move forward.”
Her message resonated strongly with the audience, particularly young women aspiring to take up leadership roles within their communities.
Delivering the keynote address, East Sepik Deputy Governor Manuel Ganai issued a strong call to action to all six districts in the province.
He urged district administrations to actively include women and youth in District Services Improvement Program [DSIP] planning and implementation.
“There must be visible evidence of inclusion,” Ganai stressed. “Women and youths must not only be participants but decision-makers in development processes.”
The celebration concluded on a high note, with women’s council groups traveling from as far as Ambunti-Drekikir District, joining participants from Wewak District and other parts of the province.
