A Morobe health worker is being recognised for her dedication to women’s and family healthcare, while continuing to call on parents to educate their children at home.

Family Health Services Coordinator Sr Patricia Mitiel, based in Lae, is a strong advocate for preventative health and says parents must take responsibility for guiding their children.

“This must start at home; we as parents have to be responsible for educating our children about sexual and reproductive health, from immunisations to sexual health, we have to show leadership at our homes,” she said.

Sr Mitiel has dedicated her life to improving the health of women, girls and children across Morobe Province. She currently oversees the Family Health Services program under the Morobe Provincial Health Authority.

She is widely recognised for her frontline work promoting preventative healthcare and encouraging families to take early action to avoid health problems.

Sr Mitiel also encourages young women and girls to focus on education and aim for leadership roles.

“The sky is the limit, girls. Take every opportunity, strive for the best, and be the leaders of tomorrow,” she said.

Despite challenges working in remote and male-dominated environments, she continues to advocate for better support for nurses and midwives who often work long hours in difficult conditions.

She believes empowering women with knowledge and access to health services will help build stronger and healthier communities.

Sr Mitiel was recognised on National Women’s Day for her dedication to healthcare, education and leadership in Papua New Guinea.
