Mother killed in Watabung landslide

A devastating mudslide struck Watabung in Eastern Highlands Province, killing a 56-year-old mother who was sleeping in her home with her 12-year-old daughter.

The daughter survived and is recovering at Goroka Provincial Hospital.

The incident happened around 10 pm on Saturday at Nenembaro Village, near Watabung Station. Eastern Highlands Province.

Eastern Highlands Provincial Police Commander, Chief Superintendent John Kale, confirms the mother died, while her daughter escaped.

Kale warns travelers need to be cautious on the Highlands highway, especially when traveling between the Watabung and Daulo sections of the Highlands highway, due to multiple mudslides caused by the continuous rain.

He says Locals have created makeshift passages, but it's still risky, with reports of harassment and theft.

"My Policemen from Goroka and Asaro are patrolling the area since 6am on Sunday",he said

"Those who want to travel must travel during the day only",PPC Kale added.
