The Sohe District Development Authority [DDA], led by chairman and local MP Henry John Amuli, has launched a strategic shift in its Small to Medium Enterprise [SME] funding model for 2026.

Moving away from direct cash grants, the DDA has introduced the "Back to the Garden of Eden" initiative. This program focuses on intensive agricultural training and resource allocation for youths across the district to ensure sustainable economic growth.

Speaking at a ceremony for 131 youths completing their SME training in Agenambo village last week, Amuli said the pivot was born out of necessity. He said that while the DDA had funded numerous SME projects over the last seven years, the desired results were rarely achieved. By shifting to a training-first model, the DDA aims to empower youths with the skills and farming equipment necessary to work the land and effectively make ends meet.

The Sohe DDA has partnered with the Oil Palm Industry Corporation [OPIC] Popondetta Project to bolster this vision. This partnership will provide vital agricultural extension services to cash crop farmers throughout the district.

The collaboration has already seen success through two initial training programs conducted at Ilimo in Kokoda and Agenambo in Higaturu LLG. Similar sessions are scheduled for the Tamata and Kira LLGs in the coming months.

MP Amuli extended his gratitude to the OPIC Project Manager and his team for their technical support. To ensure the program’s longevity, the MP committed K400,000 to support the "Back to the Garden of Eden" rollout across the Sohe district.
