Legal year opens

Today, Monday February second, the PNG Judiciary and Legal Fraternity will officially open the 2026 Legal Year at the Waigani National Court Complex in Port Moresby.

The Legal Year Opening Service begun at eight o’clock this morning, bringing together judges, magistrates, lawyers, correctional services, disciplined forces and the public to mark the start of the judicial calendar.

The program began with a formal march from Independence Boulevard, the arrival of the Chief Justice and judges, and a guard of honour at the National Court Complex, before proceedings moved indoors for the church service.

The service is being celebrated by the United Church of Papua New Guinea and hosted by the Acting Commissioner of Correctional Services.

The Legal Year Opening is an important annual event, setting the tone for integrity, reflection and commitment to justice, the rule of law and service to the people of Papua New Guinea in the year ahead.
