The Partnership for Improving Education [PIE] and the National Department of Education [NDoE] reaffirmed their joint commitment to ensure every child in Papua New Guinea can enroll, attend and thrive in school.

Under the theme ‘Learning for All: Building Inclusive and Resilient Education Systems’, the PIE supported NDoE annual Back-to-School campaign aims to prepare families, teachers and communities for the start of the 2026 school year.

For this year’s International Education Day, the Back-to-School campaign focuses on improving regular attendance and encouraging age-appropriate enrolment, particularly in the early grades.

Studies highlight that missed classroom time undermines children’s learning and contributes to weak educational attainment.

PIE builds strong community partnerships to support the most disadvantaged children, including girls and children with disabilities.

By working with school leaders and education agencies, PIE strengthens school management and supports teachers to upgrade their qualifications and teaching practices.

These efforts align with PNG’s vision to create an education system that prepares literate, skilled, and healthy citizens for the nation’s development.

NDoE Media and Communications acting Assistant Secretary Susan Iroro said education plays a critical role in shaping children’s futures.

“Education is the foundation for a brighter future. Through the Back-to School campaign, we are ensuring that every child starts the year ready to learn and succeed,” Iroro said.

Parents are encouraged to enroll their child in age-appropriate grades beginning at 6 years old in Prep,7 years old in Grade 1, and 8 years old in Grade 2. Parents are also encouraged to help prepare their child for school by providing stationery, uniforms, and a healthy lunch.

Teachers must make learning enjoyable and act as role models who motivate students to succeed in school.

The campaign is delivered nationwide through radio, social media outreach, SMS texts, posters highlighting key information, and a Back-to School video featuring the real voices of parents, teachers and students to inspire communities.
