Southern Cross Assurance Ltd [SCAL] has officially renewed its commitment to Papua New Guinea’s golfing community, announcing its return as the naming rights sponsor for the 2026 National Amateur Golf Championship.

The locally owned general insurer has pledged K20,000 to the Papua New Guinea Golf Association [PNGGA] to headline the event for the second consecutive year. Scheduled to take place from April 3rd to April 6th, the tournament will be hosted at the Royal Port Moresby Golf Club.

The partnership aims to provide a clear pathway for local athletes to elevate from amateur ranks to the international stage. SCAL Chairman Roxon Undi said the company is eager to contribute in nurturing local potential.

"We support such initiatives that provide the pathway for these young golfers to develop their skill and talent so that they can go on to compete in the PNG Open and potentially, in tournaments around the world," Undi said.

The 2026 Championship is expected to attract over 120 of the country's top amateur golfers. The competition will be divided into four primary categories in PNG amateurs, veterans, juniors and the senior division.

This year's tournament will see top performers will earn points toward the World Amateur Golf Ranking [WAGR] providing them with global visibility.

Ian Hodge, President of the PNGGA, said the multi-year partnership with SCAL provides the stability needed to improve the tournament's quality.

"Having a partner like Southern Cross Assurance stay with us for a second year allows us to plan with confidence and elevate the standard of the tournament for all participants," Hodge said.

SCAL, which has been operating in Papua New Guinea since 2011, views the sponsorship as part of its broader mission to drive positive impacts within local communities as a 100% locally owned firm.

The public is encouraged to attend the four-day event in April to support the nation’s rising golf stars.
