Children with special needs will be enrolled in at mainstream schools in 2026

At least four special needs children at Alotau's Inclusive Education Resource Centre Callan Services will be streaming students to mainstream schools next year to pursue their education after completing their basic education at Milne Bays only

Out of eighteen [18] children who graduated last week, four have special needs, autism, and hearing impairment among them.

These children have been assessed and deemed fit to be enrolled at mainstream schools come 2026 academic year.

Speaking during the event, Head Teacher of Alotau Primary school, Emma Leisetta says while she's thrilled to have these children, the question remains if the school is equipped to cater for special needs children?

"It is better for a normal child to enter the normal stream but the question is what about the child who is special, is my school ready and am I prepared? I stand with doubts. This is the question every stakeholder should have," Leisetta said.

Despite this challenge, Leisetta is optimistic and heartily welcomes these children should their parents choose to enroll them there.

"For the future of the special children that we have, Alotau will always be ready to receive the children you are bringing to us, my teachers are ready in every sector and in any division," she stressed.
