Moresby South District Hospital set to open by year-end
The new K15 million Moresby South District Hospital is on track to open its doors by the end of this year, providing much-needed relief to the capital’s healthcare system.
Moresby South Member of Parliament, Justin Tkatchenko, confirmed the timeline yesterday during a cheque presentation to the Kaugere United Church.
Addressing the project's timeline, MP Tkatchenko said the hospital has faced several hurdles over the last few years. He emphasized that these delays were necessary to ensure the facility was built to the highest standards.
"The hospital has gone through some issues over the last two or three years, but the priority was getting it right to properly serve the people," Tkatchenko said. "The community has been waiting for almost five years for this hospital to be done correctly for the benefit of Moresby South and patients throughout Port Moresby."
The new facility is expected to significantly reduce the patient load at Port Moresby General Hospital [PMGH[. Key features of the new hospital include an emergency centre that would be equipped to handle trauma and life-threatening accidents, an eight-bed maternity ward, 10-bed ward for short-term stays, specialized clinic spaces for TB treatment, general pharmacy, and other outpatient services, and an on-site X-ray room for diagnostic support.
The project is a collaborative effort funded by the Moresby South District, the National Capital District Commission [NCDC], and the National Government.
MP Tkatchenko thanked the government for the District Services Improvement Program [DSIP] funds, stating that the investment is a well-spent use of public money that secures the health of the community for years to come.
