President Toroama backs new Justice Secretary Leontine Ivano
By Waliagai Olewale

Leontine Ivano has been formally confirmed as Secretary for Bougainville’s Department of Justice and Legal Services, after months in an acting capacity and six weeks into her substantive role.
A law graduate, Ivano began her career in private practice as a litigation lawyer before moving into company and commercial work.
She later joined the Autonomous Bougainville Government as Deputy Secretary for Policy, serving 15 months before her appointment to the top post.
At her swearing-in ceremony in Buka this week, President Ishmael Toroama, highlighted the critical role of the department during Bougainville’s transition.
He stressed that the head of the department carries immense responsibility as the region works to maintain stability and prepare for the full transfer of powers and functions from the National Government.
"The future of Bougainville's Chief Justice system and the stability of the region will depend on the decisions you make and the partnership you forge." President Toroama said.
The President further outlined the need to strengthen policing, the correction service and the work of all other sector agencies, saying restorative justice systems must continue to be encouraged to ensure communities and the government work side by side.
He says the future of Bougainville’s justice system now rests with Ms. Ivano’s leadership, adding that his government will fully support the department to operate effectively.
"I have confidence in your integrity, experience and your ability to guide the department during a transformative period in our time." Toroama said.
Toroama confirms that the Autonomous government stands ready to work with Ivano as the new Bougainville’s Department of Justice and Legal Services.
Secretary Leontine Ivano, meantime, promised to give her best to serving the Autonomous Bougainville Government and the people.
